Celebrate Chinese New Year in Liverpool this Weekend

Liverpool always celebrates in style and this Chinese New Year is no different. Our gorgeous China town is obviously a great start if you’re looking to celebrate this weekend, but there’s also loads of good (and free!) things happening across the city.

Each year in the Chinese calendar is represented by one of the twelve animals from the Chinese zodiac, and today sees us welcoming in the ‘Year of the Horse,’ an animal which represents travelling and victory-sounds promising!

The entertainment will be kicking off on Saturday 1st February at the Lark Lane Community Association, where there’ll be performances, workshops, dance, Tai Chi and arts and crafts. All free of charge and perfect if you don’t live too far from Sefton Park.

Sunday 2nd February is the best day to head into the city centre for some fun, and traditional food and drink. Head to Great George’s Square from 11am-4pm; there you’ll find the annual Taste of China street market, and at 1pm, is the big firecracker display, complete with Chinese dragons and a lucky man. A little further down the road at St. Luke’s Church (the bombed out church) will be lots of music, along with a drumming band.

So whatever you’re doing in Liverpool this weekend- whether it’s heading out for some organised celebrations or holding your own Chinese New Year party in your student accommodation, have a great time and Happy New Year!
