Unusual University student societies

Universities usually say, within reason, that you can create a society for whatever you want; ranging from sports such as cheerleading and football, to clubs focusing on music and culture. Chances are what you’re looking for is already on offer but there is always rooms for more outlandish and unusual ideas. If you’re a bit of a history buff or just loved the film Role Models, you could take up membership in The University of Liverpool’s ‘Re-enactment society’, the perfect distraction from a 12 hour stint in the library. Liverpool John Moores provide the opportunity to join their ‘Jedi Council,’ with St Andrews Uni continuing the fantasy theme with their ‘Harry Potter and Gin society,’ which aims to ‘celebrate two of the greatest things in life.’

For the more adventurous student, Reading offers a ‘Roller coaster appreciation society’ which runs numerous trips each term to a wide range of theme parks. If you wanted something slightly more unusual, the University of Birmingham offers a ‘fetish’ society and the University of Cambridge allows you to join their ‘pooh society,’ celebrating the much loved childhood character of Winnie the Pooh. Passionate food fans, or for you students who can’t muster the energy to prepare a meal for one, Bath University invites you to join their curry appreciation society. If hummus is more your thing, London School of Economics and their ‘hummus society,’ would be the perfect place to sample a wide range of the chickpea favourite.

If you’re just stuck on what you really want to spend your little bit of free time doing, you could become a member of the ‘Pirate society’ at De Montford or (and potentially the most questionable society) lies in Lancaster, where you can join ‘Pokesoc’ and reminisce about your favourite Pokemon characters and enjoy nights out in Pokemon fancy dress!

So if you’re thinking of starting some student societies, we hope we have shown you that it really is how far your imagination will take you!
